Summary

Flash Fire is the explosive sequel to The Extraordinaries by USA Today bestselling author TJ Klune!

Nick landed himself the superhero boyfriend of his dreams, but with new heroes arriving in Nova City it’s up to Nick and his friends to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous。 Which is a lot to handle for a guy who just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic。

I cannot say enough about this book, especially the audio version。 The narrator, Michael Lesley, imbued so much energy in to all the words, all the voices, and even the end credits and copyright note。 I called a lot of the plot twists, and usually that bothers me, but I love these Nick, Seth, Gibby and Jazz like friends so I don't care, and I didn't want it to end! This novel is a sequel to The Extraordinaries, and that is the first thing I’d like to commend the author for: despite not having read the first volume, I did not feel like I was missing something vital in reading this volume first。 It was clear enough at some point that I checked to see if this was a sequel, and I have no idea if the amount of detail about the first book would be too much for someone who has read The Extraordinaries or not, but it was nice to read a sequel, know it was a sequel This novel is a sequel to The Extraordinaries, and that is the first thing I’d like to commend the author for: despite not having read the first volume, I did not feel like I was missing something vital in reading this volume first。 It was clear enough at some point that I checked to see if this was a sequel, and I have no idea if the amount of detail about the first book would be too much for someone who has read The Extraordinaries or not, but it was nice to read a sequel, know it was a sequel, and not feel lost because of it, while not feeling inundated with so much information from the first book that there’s no point in reading it。 I also think that the author did a good job capturing the teenage, high school experience。That said, there were other things I didn’t like。 The book starts with “Chapter 36”, which confused me - and confused me even more when it turned out to be “fan fic” written by the main character, in which he described a gay boy’s fantasy encounter with his boyfriend。 If you don’t want to read about heavy petting, this book is going to start off badly, especially as the next chapter basically repeats the encounter, but with the main character’s actual boyfriend - about whom the fan fic was written, so at least that makes sense。 If you’re reading this for more encounters, however, you’ll be disappointed; there’s a few, enough to be off-putting if that’s what you’re looking for, but nowhere near enough to class this as soft porn outside of those passages。Nick is a 16 year-old boy in love with another 16 year-old boy; what makes their relationship different is that Seth, Nick’s boyfriend, is also a superhero。 As a superhero novel, there’s actually very little superhero action going on; what there is, is a lot of teenage angst, centering on Nick, Seth, their best friends Gibby and Jazz (another couple), high school, and their parents - all pretty typical teenage stuff except for the superhero piece and the in-your-face constant reminders of everyone’s sexuality。 On the one hand, it’s nice to see a novel with so many characters who are out in high school; on the other hand, I lost track of how many times Nick felt it necessary to remind people that Seth isn’t gay, he’s bisexual; it seemed out of place in a high school cafeteria, especially repeated so many times。 The references were so nonchalant, and yet so continual, that it became almost preachy, as did Nick’s father’s frequent attempts to ensure that Nick practices safe sex should he ever, eventually, reach that point with Seth - including, but not limited to, discussions of dental dams and providing condoms on prom night。 It reached the point where it detracted from the plot, which was a fairly straightforward superhero premise, with some issues around secret identities particular to teens。 The path to discovering one’s powers harks back to some very early X-Men issues, although it’s entirely possible that the author hasn’t seen those; it’s hard to say, as there’s only so many ways to present “Something weird is happening to me - things are happening that I can’t control and don’t understand”。Overall, I think there was an attempt to get too many themes into one book, and it kept each theme from being properly developed。 Either a longer novel, or the omission of something - sexuality, loss of a parent, teenage angst around relationships and parents, social media presence, bullying, peer pressure, plus other themes also present — would have made it feel less like a rush to get everything in。 In trying to be everything to everyone, this book falls short of being what it could have been。 Hopefully, the third novel predicted in the epilogue will do better。 。。。more

Everything about this book has me gushing with happiness。 There were so many important topics discussed and so many potentially perilous situations, yet the overarching feel of this book is uplifting。 You just can't help but smile! It is filled to the brim with moments of second-hand embarrassment so extreme that I could feel myself blushing as I read on。 It was hilarious and utterly charming and I have come to love this series completely。Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the review c Everything about this book has me gushing with happiness。 There were so many important topics discussed and so many potentially perilous situations, yet the overarching feel of this book is uplifting。 You just can't help but smile! This was such a fun read! The dialogues and banters between characters were so good and natural。 Characters were great and I’m happy to say that I finally can distinguish Gibby and Jazz (which was one of my issues from the 1st one)。 I’m so intrigued at to what will happen because the author left us a cliffhanger。

The book is far from perfect but, looking past its many flaws, it is a lot of fun。 More than fun enough to make up for the problems。

Another winner by TJ Klune。 "Flash Fire" is every bit as heartwarming and funny (and relevant) as its predecessor-maybe even more so。 Where Klune excels is making us care about his cast of characters, hero and civie alike。 It's so easy to get lost in the worlds (and words) of Klune, but so hard to come back from。 I adore this series and hope Klune has many more EXTRAORDINARY stories tucked under his cape。 Another winner by TJ Klune。 "Flash Fire" is every bit as heartwarming and funny (and relevant) as its predecessor-maybe even more so。 Where Klune excels is making us care about his cast of characters, hero and civie alike。 It's so easy to get lost in the worlds (and words) of Klune, but so hard to come back from。 I adore this series and hope Klune has many more EXTRAORDINARY stories tucked under his cape。 。。。more

I also finished this one a loooong time ago。Buddy read and gift from @Nik Nak。 So。。。 let me start with the fact that I am a total Klunatic。 I believe that TJ Klune is one of the best writers in MM romance out there right now。 The way he weaves his stories, angst and humor and romance, is not easily done snd ge always wows me。 Except here。 Here he didn't wow me。 Even with the one and only Michael Lesley narrating, I struggled to finish。 I put it down and picked it up so many times。 This in itself I also finished this one a loooong time ago。Buddy read and gift from @Nik Nak。 So。。。 let me start with the fact that I am a total Klunatic。 I believe that TJ Klune is one of the best writers in MM romance out there right now。 The way he weaves his stories, angst and humor and romance, is not easily done snd ge always wows me。 Except here。 Here he didn't wow me。 Even with the one and only Michael Lesley narrating, I struggled to finish。 I put it down and picked it up so many times。 This in itself was a sign if things to come。 Mostly, the things that didn't work for me here was the fact that I felt like this book was all filler。 Too much info and nothing really happening。。。。This and the POLITICS。 Now I understand the backlash of what happend whrn TJ published The Extraordinaries, because of Nick's dad and police brutality。 Here, TJ is trying to compensate for his faux pas, which wasn't intentional btw, but he ended up overdoing it。 To the point that most of the book felt。。。preachy。 sometimes, I felt as if i was reading a TED Talk。 I mean, I get the conflict and the past reviews and the hate they threw his way because of TE, but I think all of that made him write in a way that really isn't him。。。he was being too politically correct, too preachy, too careful。。。to the point where it felt like this wasn't a TJ book。 The humor that was in book 1, and most of his books, was missing, save for a few moments here and there。 The plot develeopment which he certainly excels at was too weak, again because of him being too careful。 Too many things going on and mostbof them aren't really important imho。 I did love the Nicky and Seth moments。 They were sweet and fun。 I loved the side characters too, and how they all banded together。 I loved the fight sequence in the school as well。 As for the cliffy。。。。 I kind of saw it a mile away。 I wasn't really surprised。 I will be reading the last book in the series nonetheless, because it's TJ and I'm still intrigued to see what would happen。 PS。。。 Micheal Lesley was still phenomenal in his performance, even if I didn't really love the book itself。 。。。more

3 1/2 stars。 As always, I enjoyed the author’s writing, his characters’ personalities and humor however I think the plot skews just too young for my interest。 This book probably deserves a higher score but it really didn’t put its hooks into me like his non-YA novels。

1。) The Extraordinaries ★★★★★2。) Flash Fire ★★★3。) Book 3 - forthcomingAs much as I enjoy T。J。 Klune's humor (and continued to do so in Flash Fire), this installment of his YA superhero series was a bit of a miss for me personally。 I loved The Extraordinaries, so it surprised me that this book suffered from what I would diagnose as Middle Book Syndrome。 In trilogies, I tend to notice that there's almost always one book that pales in comparison to the other two。 This seems to be the case here。So, 1。) The Extraordinaries ★★★★★2。) Flash Fire ★★★3。) Book 3 - forthcomingAs much as I enjoy T。J。 Klune's humor (and continued to do so in Flash Fire), this installment of his YA superhero series was a bit of a miss for me personally。 I loved The Extraordinaries, so it surprised me that this book suffered from what I would diagnose as Middle Book Syndrome。 In trilogies, I tend to notice that there's almost always one book that pales in comparison to the other two。 This seems to be the case here。So, here were my problems:1。) For as much attention as Jazz and Gibby received (which I did appreciate the attempt to give them more screen time), I feel like I know next to nothing more about them than I did before。 I suppose their parents were introduced, but that didn't exactly help flesh them out as their relationship dynamics with their parents were never expanded upon。 2。) There was very little progression of plot, and when the plot did progress it was extremely predictable。 Nothing about this book surprised or intrigued me。 If anything, 3/4 of it felt like an expanded epilogue to the first book。 Also, I hated the "plot twist" that I saw coming from a mile away。 I was crossing my fingers that it wouldn't go in that direction, but it did。3。) I love Nick and Seth together, but other than the stereotypical "relationship steps" like ILYs and talks of sex, their relationship received almost no depth or expansion on an emotional level。 I didn't feel their chemistry as much as I did in book one。4。) Any point T。J。 tried to make in this book was smacked across your face。 Were there instances of this in book one? Yes, but I was able to overlook it due to the care and attention other aspects of the story were given。 I know there was controversy and problems with book one and of course I'm happy that T。J。 wanted to fix that, but to me this read like he panicked and then overcorrected what was probably an already finished draft。What I liked:1。) Miss Conduct。 I want a spinoff about Miss Conduct。 Now。2。) The humor。 Obviously。3。) I still love and adore our disaster gay protagonist, Nicholas Bell。My hopes are that book 3 will provide us with the balance and utter joy that was The Extraordinaries and the social consciousness of Flash Fire。 。。。more
